Jalaluddin Rumi begins his poem titled The Guest House writing, “This being human is a guest house. Every morning a new arrival. A joy, a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor.” I thought of this poem as I watched the news coverage of the fighting in Israel this morning. It was heartbreaking to hear about death tolls and to see children walking through demolished neighborhoods.
I’m guessing nobody that will read this issue of The Oasis will face the fear of a bomb falling on their home today, but we all face terrible circumstances: relationship turmoil, illness, fear, and loss. Each day something arrives at our door. Sometimes the visitor is a joy or an awareness. Other arrivals aren’t so pleasant, requiring managing and persevering.
I believe God is always with us. I believe God never leaves us to face our troubles alone, but sometimes I like to have a little assurance. I wouldn’t mind a convincing sign every now and then. Rumi ends in his poem saying, “The dark thought, the shame, the malice, meet them at the door laughing, and invite them in. Be grateful for whoever comes, because each has been sent as a guide from beyond.”
I also believe God sends us “guides from beyond.” I just pray for the peace and awareness to recognize them when they come. I pray the same for you.
This Sunday is Pentecost, the day we recall the followers of Jesus receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit. It is considered the birth of the church. The color red represents the Holy Spirit, so If you are attending in-person worship this Sunday, I invite you to wear red. Also, Sabrina Stephens has put together a fun activity for the kids for Sunday afternoon at the church starting at 1pm. No screens. No zoom. Just outdoor rock painting. I’ll be there and hope to join lots of our kids to paint some rocks.
