This Sunday is Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week. Beautiful palms will adorn the sanctuary and we will have them for each of you to have and take home. It’s one of the biggest days in the church calendar. For years, I’ve been drawn to a detail in the Palm Sunday story, the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. It’s the part where Jesus instructs two of the disciples, saying, “Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been written. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ Just say this, ‘The Lord needs it.’”
When I read those words, I always wonder if I’m holding onto resources the Lord needs. Are there things I’ve “tied up” so they are unavailable for the Lord’s work in the world? Have I tied up my time with activities that are useless and even destructive? Do I have material possessions or financial resources tied up of which the Lord is in need? Do I have a skill or talent that, for some reason, I have not made available to the Lord?
In order for Jesus to dramatize his peaceful and humble “kingship” something needed to be untied and made available. Perhaps, as we enter into Holy Week together, each of us might reflect on the things in our lives that could be untied, things the Lord might need. Are we ready to undo some knots and release some of the things that were once tied down very tightly.
The death and resurrection of Jesus is the foundation of our faith and tradition. Please take note of the worship services happening during Holy Week and make a point to join us. You will find all the details here in this edition of the Oasis.

Blessings,
Eric
