I love finding out something I didn’t know before. That feeling of “huh, neat,” you get when you learn some new factoid. For instance, did you know that just like humans, cows moo in regional accents? Or that in 1915 a man named Cecil Chubb bought Stonehenge as a gift for his wife, but she didn’t like it, so he gave it to the nation of Great Britain? Or that ants can survive being put in the microwave?
That’s a thing you know now. Neat, huh?
There’s so much we don’t know, so much yet to learn, and I think that’s one of the most beautiful things about life. From useless factoids to great philosophical truths to an understanding of why you as a person react the way you do to one thing or another.
We can sit here and just exist, content in what we know (or think we know)… or we can keep our eyes and our ears and our minds open to all the things this world has yet to reveal to us. As a person of faith, I believe that God too reveals new things to us every day, if we’re looking for it.
Never stop learning. Never stop exploring. There’s always something new for you just over the next horizon, and it might just transform you in ways you never could have predicted. Spring is a season of transformation, a season of new life. Let’s go and find it.
Exercise: Think I’m wrong? Think you know it all? See how many of these questions you can get right (answers below). What is the most common bird in the world? What is the most common metal in the human body? What country invented the fortune cookie? What is a group of turtles called? What was the last letter added to the English alphabet? How many flavors of Froot Loops are there? What is the most shoplifted book in history?
