So, what do you think about when you hear the word “steward”?

  • Do you think about your finances?
  • Do you have visions of your church running a giving campaign?
  • Does taking care of the environment come to mind?
  • Does taking care of our neighbors and community come to mind?

All of these ideas and much more are parts of what it means to be a steward. But they don't paint a complete picture of the biblical meaning of stewardship.

A biblical world view of stewardship can be consciously defined as: "Utilizing and managing all resources God provides for the glory of God and the betterment of His creation." The central essence of biblical world view stewardship is managing everything God brings into the believer's life in a manner that honors God... In short: Biblical stewardship is one of the primary ways Christ calls us to live our life.

This year we decided to focus our 2023 Stewardship theme on the reflection of First Parish’s commitment to creation care, “Uniting for Creation.”

Adam and Eve were the first stewards. “And God blessed them. And God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (Genesis 1:28). “The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it” (Genesis 2:15). God set out instructions for how Adam and Eve were to keep and take care of creation.
