Director of Music Ministries - Wendell S. Purrington

Mr. Purrington has been involved in church music since he began singing in children's choir at age eight and playing the church organ a few years later. Prior to becoming Director of Music Ministries at First Parish Church in 1995, he served at Wakefield-Lynnfield (MA) United Methodist Church (6 years), Dover First Parish Church (5 years), and St. Mark's United Methodist Church (10 years). He holds a Bachelor of Music Education (voice) from Boston Conservatory, and a Master of Music (choral conducting) from New England Conservatory. Wendell was the choral director in the Portsmouth School District for 36 years, was musical director for six summer productions at the Prescott Park Arts Festival, and has served as guest conductor for several festival choruses and choral ensembles including Amare Cantare and the Manchester Choral Society. He has directed the Seacoast Community Chorus for over 20 years, and recently been named conductor of the Fourth Street Jazz Choir in Dover. His leadership helped establish the annual Messiah-Sing at the Portsmouth Music Hall. At First Parish, Wendell oversees the music program and conducts the sanctuary choir, men's ensemble and bell choir; he also accompanies the children's, youth, and high school choirs. He finds a strong connection between music and worship, and helps to link our hearts, souls, minds and spirits to God through a wide variety of musical offerings.

"When in our music God is glorified, it is as if the whole creation cried: Alleluia!"
